A common worry among patients considering a lip injection is that their lips will not look natural after treatment. A post-marketing study has evaluated both patient and partner satisfaction of lip enhancement with Restylane Kysse, one of the leading filler brands on the market.1 The study showed a high level of patient and partner satisfaction with lip fullness, naturalness and “kissability” after treatment.

Lip enhancement with hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers is a sought-after aesthetic treatment. To achieve a high level of patient satisfaction, a lip filler must be able to create a natural fullness and volume not only at rest but also in animation. This requires a certain amount of softness and flexibility of the HA gel, but also sufficient firmness to retain the shape of the lips over time. Restylane Kysse from Galderma is a lip filler that has been specially developed for volumizing the lips. Restylane Kysse is manufactured using OBT™ technology, which produces soft and flexible gels.

Study evaluating lip enhancement – both patient and partner satisfaction

Recently, an open-label post-marketing study has evaluated the ability of Restylane Kysse to provide a natural lip enhancement. A novelty of the study was that it assessed both patient and partner satisfaction with the treatment. In total, 59 patients were included in the study, whereof 19 received Restylane Kysse only, and 40 received Restylane Kysse in combination with Restylane Refyne and/or Restylane Defyne for correction of facial wrinkles and folds.

The primary objective was to evaluate the aesthetic improvement compared to before treatment using the Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) eight weeks after treatment. Secondary objectives were to assess improvement in lip fullness and naturalness. Patient satisfaction was assessed using the questionnaire FACE-Q™ Satisfaction with Lips. In addition, both patients and partners evaluated the treatment using a questionnaire on kissability, eight weeks post-treatment. Finally, the safety of Restylane Kysse was evaluated by assessment of adverse events.

The result of the study – natural and kissable lips

The study showed that the first objective was met, 100% of the patients and investigators rated the lips as improved, much improved or very much improved at week eight after the lip filler treatment. Regarding the FACE-Q evaluation, 87% of the patients were satisfied with all items. A detailed overview of the satisfaction of the different items can be seen in Figure 1.

The study also showed a high level of satisfaction according to the kissability evaluation. More than 98% of the patients were satisfied or very satisfied with the kissability of their lips and 96% thought that their lips had a natural look after treatment. In addition, 90% of the partners were satisfied or very satisfied with the appearance of the patients’ lips after treatment and 73% of partners agreed that the patients’ lips had a more kissable and natural feel after treatment.

Regarding safety, all treatment-emergent related adverse events were non-serious and 96% were mild, with a median duration of 2.5 days.

High level of patient and partner satisfaction

To sum up, the study showed that a lip enhancement with Restylane Kysse creates natural lip volume with a high level of patient and partner satisfaction. The patients thought that the lips had a natural look and sensuous feel and were satisfied or very satisfied with the kissability aspect of the lip filler. In addition, partners were satisfied with the appearance of the lips and a majority of partners agreed that the lips had a more kissable and natural feel compared to before treatment.
